TOBIE OPENSHAW


Tobie Openshaw is a South African-born cameraman/producer/editor/photographer who has been working in video and photography for over 18 years. Currently living in Taiwan, he has filmed and traveled from desert to city to jungle, in Africa, Europe, the US, Australia and Asia.

He has a day job working for Corel’s video- and image-editing software division, while continuing to do personal video and photo projects – or shooting for clients such as Discovery Channel and National Geographic Channel. His most recent work was shooting the first episode in National Geographic’s Salvage: Code Red II Series.

He collaborated with photojournalist Kloie Picot on the documentary film “Shots that Bind – Palestinian Photojournalists in Nablus” which subsequently won the Best Cinematography award in the Documentary section of the New York Independent Film & Video Festival.

Tobie has become internationally-known for his long-running work documenting the unique betelnut-girl culture of Taiwan. His documentary film proposal for “Chew on This – Betelnut Culture in Taiwan” was twice shortlisted in the National Geographic Channel Asia’s “Taiwan to the World” projects. He has held several successful exhibitions of his work on the subject, to intense media interest, and his photos have been published on numerous websites and publications, including the LA Times. He is currently compiling a book of photographs showcasing 7 years of work on the subject.
